Kharma Cries!

kharma criesThe WWE pulled a swerve on me with Kharma on Monday’s Raw that left me confused, intrigued, and ultimately amazed. A four on four match between Melina, the Bella Twins and Maryse and Beth Phoenix, Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim and Eve had just begun with Kelly Kelly taking it to Brie Bella for pulling twin magic the night before at the ‘Over the Limit’ PPV. Suddenly, Kharma music hits and out struts the women herself, down to the ring. Kharma doesn’t hesitate to enter the ring and Beth directs the Divas to circle the Diva Killer. Kharma looks like shes getting ready to summon some ‘awesome’ power, and I’m wondering what’s going on, as I don’t see Kharma as actually able to take on every Diva at the same time. Then, Kia Steven falls on her knees and begins to cry! We’re talking real tears, eyes looking so wounded you think her heart has been ripped out. And the Divas are all looking on wondering what the heck is going on as Raw goes to commercial break.

My first reaction to this was, “I can’t believe they just buried Kharma.” Then, I realised what had just been shattered was my expectation of Kharma. A moment flashed in my mind’s eye as I recalled Vince McMahon looking at Bret ‘The Hitman’ Heart and asking, “Tell me, where can we go with Bret Hart?” It was a moment describing the events that lead up to the infamous Montreal Screwjob and it brought the situation into perspective for me. Vince knows he’s got something good in Kia Stevens, but a 2D monster who rips through the division only works until it’s stale and then there’s no where else to go with Kharma and she has to be released. By introducing an emotional vulnerability to Kharma, WWE has preserved Kharma as physically the ultimate Diva Killer and unmatched physically by any other Diva in the division, while destroying a 2D persona and replacing it with something that has durability.

This is a good time to point out that Kia Stevens just sold the angle of her life in the ring, and did it amazingly well. I get really pissed off when people knock the drama represented in wrestling. To me, wrestling is the modern-day equivalent of the people’s theatre and therefore enherits a very proud tradition of being an art form that communicates the daily trials of the masses. That’s you if don’t own a yact and roll like a gangster, or make your living of the back of the common man. That was an oscar worthy performance, improvised on the fly in front of thousands of booing fans.

So what the heck is going on? Well, there are several possibilities that come from this. WWE is in the middle of an anti-bullying campaign right now, and Kharma may be the poster child for this campaign. At the same time, Kharma now has the same emotional complexity of…Mankind, Kane, and other monster heels with issues. There is only so much that Kane can do in the ring, but his character is complex enough that he continues to be a draw after 14 years with WWE. And you know with Kane there’s this monster under the surface that can come out at any time and set Kane off on a rampage. The Big Show is dangerous normally, but tick him off and he can take on the entire WWE roster. Kharma now joins that rank of WWE monster heels as a long-term asset.

I expect a dedicated followup on what’s going on in Friday’s Smackdown, because WWE needs to explain this new and more complex Kharma to the audience ASAP! Maybe Layla can approach Kharma and get her talking. I find it hard to believe that a character this complex can be silent, so I’m expecting to hear Kharma talk and say what’s on her mind. I have seen Kia Stevens stomp and glare and emote the perfect monster- I mean, when she starts to glare you’d think she’s suddenly seven feet tall and four hundred pounds- but until I saw Kia break down in the ring on Monday, I had no idea just how good this woman is as a performer. I am now looking forward to seeing how good Kia can be on the mic. Does Kharma truly possess all three traits of a great performer? We shall see.

As weird as it all is, I have to give a nodd to Vince for throwing the dice and doing something unpredictable for a change. I’ll say it again, I am confused and intrigued by this swerve- it has truly thrown off my expectations and I can’t wait to see what happens next on Friday. Well done, Vince!

Kharma (Awesome Kong) proves that Kharma is a (expletive) at Extreme Rules 2011

What a crazy night for the Divas at Extreme Rules 2011!

Layla and Michelle McCool, unable to reconcile their issues in spite of multiple sessions with a relationship counsellor, fought in tonight’s PPV in a ‘Loser quits’ match. Layla pulled through and won the match by countering a faithbreaker for a pinfall! Layla then left in tears as her ex-BFFF Michelle cried her tears out in the ring. What happens next sent shivers down my spine…

Somebody left the rear door unwatched, because Awesome Kong -now calling herself Kharma- slipped inside and is now in the WWE. Kong/Kharma isn’t a beauty pageant contestent, she’s a monster heel! And a girl! In the WWE? The rumour is that Jim Ross and Steve Austin held the emergency door open for her. Kudos to Kong and thanks to Jim Ross and Steve Austin!

The WWE has been promoting her debute for several weeks now on RAW, SMACKDOWN and SUPERSTARS. In these insightful videos, Kong lays out her strategy for the divas. Kong’s strategy is to pop the heads and legs off the barbie doll wrestlers in the WWE. While laughing maniacally.

Michelle McCool should have run for the front exit when Kharma’s music hit after Layla left because what happens next ain’t pretty. Kharma marched down the ramp to the ring, grabbed Michelle and gave her an implant buster, laying her flat out. Then she laughed maniacally. Kong then left the ring, mercifully leaving a laid out Michelle McCool her head and legs.

Folks, what a great moment for the Divas. I wasn’t sure what the WWE had in mind for Kong and how the audience was going to respond to Kharma, but what I saw I liked! Every division needs a giant, and now the Divas have Kharma!

There has been speculation that Michelle was planning on stepping away from WWE. This really makes a person wonder about Michelle’s other half, known in some circles as the Undertaker. With Michelle evidently planning for life after wrestling, it’s a strong signal that the deadman’s career clock has hit the number 11. Even time tolls for thee, Deadman.

Michelle being buried by Kharma on her way out was a fantastic way to debute Kong. Kudos to you, Michelle for giving that bump perfectly! Now, I have to admit in the past I bought into the rumors about Michelle’s attitude backstage. In restrospect, what I’ve always seen from Michelle has been a serious attitude about the business and becoming as good as she could be in the ring, on the mic, in a promo and with the fans. Michelle may not have gotten over with every fan, but she did win me over. Love her or hate her, we should acknowledge that Michelle approached wrestling as a professional, she loves wrestling and gave her opportunities 100%.

Thank you, Michelle McCool!

Layla apologized to the Divas in the locker room after the match for the way she acted. Does this mean Layla’s going face? Well, before that happens, I expecting Layla to continue to show loyalty to her ex-flawless friends and call Kharma out for that implant buster! Poor Layla, so full of personality, but just not that sharp a tack. PREDICTION: Layla will become the second Diva to be laid out by Kharma. Whatever else happens, I hope WWE continues to give Layla opportunities to hold a mic…and I hope she can still chew food after Kharma’s done with her…

Last question is about the future direction of the Diva division. I guess we’re going to be seeing plenty of ‘Instant Kharma’ around the divas on RAW, as Kong is going to be beating (expletive)’s dead. We’re going to get some amazing matches involving Kharma versus Natalya, Beth Phoenex, Melina, and maybe even a Gail Kim versus Kong, round 2? As for Kelly Kelly, Alicia Fox, the twins, and others…better reserve a bed in the local emergency room, ladies.

Kharma’s goinna getcha!

WWE Diva Michelle McCool the Unified Diva’s Champion

Michelle McCool defeated Diva’s Champion Melina thanks to some help from the other half of team LayCool, WWE Diva Layla to become the first Unified Divas Champion. The match took place September 19, 2010 during the WWE Night of Champions PPV event. Congratulations to Michelle, as she continues to rip through her competition and continues to prove that she is the top Diva in WWE!

Layla’s willingness to help Michelle McCool seems pretty foolish and shows a gullibility in Layla that’s going to lead to some hard life lessons. On Friday’s WWE Smackdown, Layla agreed to decide who would fight Melina at the PPV by drawing a name from a hat. Layla discovered after McCool won the draw that all the names in the hat were McCool: she rigged the vote. Layla resolved on Friday not to help McCool during the lumberjill match.

But, now WWE reports that this was all a ruse and Michelle McCool and Layla had this swerve planned for the Night of Champions.

We’re not so sure that Layla was in the know- we just think Layla was doing what friends do for freinds. The problem for Layla is, now that Michelle McCool has the title- is she really willing to share the belt with Layla? Knowing just how rutheless McCool can be- we’re betting this freindship is over as of next Smackdown.

What could really come out of this- something that would really show McCool’s heel nature- would be that Michelle dumps her BFF for the belt and treats her ex-freind like crap until Beth Phoenix returns. If McCool then turns back to Layla for help against the Glamazon, she will look like a total…heel.

Diva Champion Mickey James retains against #1 Diva Contender Gail Kim on RAW

WWE started Summerslam on RAW with two title defences, including Mickey James defending against #1 Contender Gail Kim.

Gail Kim and Mickey James put on a great back and forth with each Diva at times mirroring each other’s moves. The end came when Gail went for a cross body on Mickey that Mickey rolled under. Gail landed hard on her jaw and was basically out of it. Mickey attempted to DDT a dazed Gail Kim only to have Gail counter the DDT on instinct. Mickey’s follow up with a lose spinning leg kick and an elbow toppled Gail backwards onto the mat. It took Mickey a moment to realise Gail wasn’t getting back up before Mickey covered Gail Kim for a three count.

After the match, Mickey helped Gail stand and when she still wasn’t responding, Mickey lifted Gail’s hand with her’s to the crowd.

It looks like Gail really was knocked senseless by the crossbody and we’re hoping she’s alright. Both Mickey and Gail were feeling each other out throughout this rushed 3:30 title defense and we think both girls could put on one hell of a program against each other.

While some people refer to Mickey’s ending elbow as the ELBOW of doom, we seriously think Mickey could have bowled Gail over with the FINGERPOKE of doom at the end. Great match, tough ending and a tough crowd still punch drunk from the return of DX and the beatdown by Legacy.

Good match, Divas, and we seriously hope Gail Kim’s allright.

Gail Kim Updates her MySpace

gailkim4.jpg07/23/2009

Im finally home and havent logged in to my account for sooo long so I thought I would write some thoughts on my last overseas tour and my move to Monday Night Raw!

It was my first time in hawaii, Japan and the Phillipines and even though it was really exhausting with the change in time, I had a really amazing time. Tokyo was definitely my favorite out of the 3. It was such a great experience to FINALLY wrestle in Japan. The fans were so respectful and appreciative of our hard work. Dont get me wrong, I loved hitting the beach and spending the 4th of July in hawaii! 🙂 but I was waiting a long time to go to Japan. I especially loved the fashion there…I have to go back strictly for a shopping trip! :)))

As for this recent draft, I was kind of surprised but happy. I loved the Smackdown side and will miss everyone there but I know this is a great opportunity and a chance to go for the one title I havent held yet… the DIVAS championship title. I also love the live show aspect and am really looking forward to facing Beth Phoenix or possibly Mickie James. I have a lot of respect for them and havent faced them since pretty much my independent wrestling days. It will be interesting to see how far we have come since those days!

Im getting a lot of emails and comments regarding how im being used in the wwe and I appreciate the support but I wish everyone would just be patient like I am and stay positive. Im having fun and am doing what I love…. good things come to those who wait!

xoxo

WWE has a new photo shoot on their site of Gail Kim. This picture is in Gail’s MySpace and not WWE. This picture is too hot for PG-13.

Things worth talking about the WWE Divas

gailkim4.jpgSorry McCool, you picking up the Women’s belt to become the first Diva to hold both the Divas Championship and Women Championship in WWE history didn’t get enough noise to cover a pin dropping in the arena at WWE’s The Bash. You held that belt up high in victory over the defeated ex-champion Melina and the audience turned their heads and yawned.

A Diva mark might have said that the casual WWE fan did not appreciate the means by which the opportunity to win this belt came about. Former WWE Women Champion Melina was basically traded for Maryse and brought over for a booked squash match against McCool. Another surprise trade also removed Gail Kim to RAW and ended the threat of yet another Diva knocking McCool off her perch at Smackdown. Funny, we thought the top dog is supposed to be decided in the ring with a good old wrestling match and the reaction of the fans, not in a backstage power play. Nepotism is alive and kicking in WWE.

Seriously, how can somebody who draws absolutely no reaction from the WWE audience be considered as top Diva on Smackdown?

But the truth is that the casual WWE fan knew nothing about rumoured backstage tantrums.

The casual WWE fan simply knows something that every women wrestling fan dreads to be caught defending: the Diva product is crap. It’s crap by design. If a Diva tries to portray herself as anything other than something for a man to oogle, she’s punished by the management with humiliating storylines (such as Beth Phoenix), or perched on a block of ice to think about her place in the WWE world(such as Beth Phoenix). And this world has got to be stuck somewhere in the sixties (off topic, but in R-Truth and Cryme Time’s case, didn’t WWE ever hear of Martin Luthor King? Didn’t they bite into the dream?). Women lib never happened and girl power is some strange phenomena to be grouped with Wikka and the phases of the moon. The only thing expected of a Diva is that a Diva looks good. The rest, the booking, the champions, the feuds are all treated with complete indifference. The result is that there is no defending this product. Anyone who saw history being made with Michelle McCool at the bash, shrugged, grunted “Eh”, and took a pee break was absolutely correct in their reaction.

So, fellow women wrestling fans, at least we have each other. We group at the WWE Diva forum and constantly pick over our personal beefs with the Divas, rehash and re-enact the moment our mark illusions were shattered. We just can’t get over just how little WWE cares about us or our Divas as anything other than sex objects. The truth is that we ran out of new material to hash over about ten thousand threads back.

In this wasteland where once girl power fought for a place in the main event, we still have our heroines fighting to create a moment of magic with the fans. If McCool is the poster child of a Diva having what she wants handed to her, then we have GOT to nod our heads towards Gail Kim and Alicia Fox for making lemonade out of what they’ve been given to work with. Alicia may not have had much choice in the matter: she’s the only Diva without the seniority to refuse to take a bump from Gail Kim. Truth is, Alicia has been thrown around by everyone and in taking her bumps, she’s already proven her worth in the ring to us. Alicia isn’t just another pretty face. In match after match, in a surprise trade to RAW, in a bikini match and a leg match, Gail and Alicia are upping their game every single week. Alicia’s timed kick to Gail’s leap from the top rope was endowed with sick timing. Sick timing! That is the difference between McCool and Gail Kim; one makes crap even when everything is handed on a silver platter and the other spins gold from the worst of crap.

We do think that it’s laughable that the only reason for a Gail Kim and Alicia Fox feud is because Gail Kim doesn’t have anyone else to beat up right now. Doesn’t that make Gail the heel? Come one, WWE! Get off your buts and give their feud some back story, will ya? They’re giving us GOLD!

But Gail Kim and Alica Fox are fighting to win over a crowd that doesn’t have a reason to care. WWE reportedly wants to feature the Divas who look good in bikinis on RAW right now. This policy won’t change even though the bikini match lost viewers on RAW. We should say, though, that we really liked the bikini stipulation because it fit with Seth Green’s image and target market. In context of Green making the call as GM, it was great. In the bigger picture it’s another sign not to get your hopes up regarding the Diva product anytime soon. And yet, it WAS more than just a bikini pageant; all the Divas worked hard in that bout (another reason to give the match a thumbs up). So we should be more clear: Don’t get your hopes up about the product because it’s the same management and when the Divas do more than look pretty you bet there’s a backlash coming down to put them back in their places.

It all goes back to WWE being top dog without challengers for far too long. WWE will tell the WWE fan what to like and who to cheer for. There’s no threat of the fans walking out and across the street to the ‘other’ promotion if they don’t like what they see. No need to catch up with the times. And if the boss’s eyes glaze over when a women wrestling storyline comes up, the bookers learn to steer away from the subject.

It’s an old man’s WWE Universe, after all.

Current feuds:

Michelle McCool and Melina

Gail Kim and Alicia Fox

Mickie James and Maryse

Natalya and Eve

aliciafoxcarnival.jpeg
The Hair is proving her worth in the squared circle. WWE has several pics up in the Daily Diva section featuring Divas at the carnival. We don’t know who took the pictures, we just like them.

Gail Kim tribute

A little reminder who’s about who’s coming to RAW after the tour is done. Enjoy!

Gail Kim to Raw, Alicia Fox to Raw, Natalya to Smackdown

gailkimnadia.jpegDonald Trump’s brief tenure as the owner of raw continues to pay out interest(ing) dividends for WWE fans. On on Monday’s episode of raw it was announced that the Donald has arrange the trade of more than a dozen superstars throughout all three WWE brands. That’s the excuse WWE is using to implement another draft after saying there would be no more cross brand appearances by wrestlers and each brand would be complete and of itself. Okay I guess Donald Trump is also responsible for the hall passes for Jericho and Hardy.

At the top the list moving to the Raw roster is none other than Gail Kim. So, Gail Kim is excited about the upcoming two week tour including Hawaii, Japan and the Phillipines. Tomorrow Gail Kim and Alicia Fox may get a chance to respond to the unexpected brand swap during the tapings for this Friday’s Smackdown. Then, after the tour ends Gail Kim and Alicia Fox will join the main event! The two may continue their feuding when on Mondays..which we don’t mind at all. Alicia Fox has shown us, the fans, that she’s willing to sell and work to get us into her matches and we think she’s quickly establishing herself as a rising star.

Gail Kim posted on her MySpace on Sunday, June 28, 2009,

HEY! ITS ME!!!! 🙂

Hey guys!! Its been a minute since Ive actually posted anything with the exception of the rare message on my site, thegailkim.com but I had to clarify that I DO NOT have a twitter account or a Facebook account!!! If I ever choose to have one I’ll let everyone know…so if you think its me, its a FAKE!

Im off to the west coast now then Hawaii, Japan and Phillipines!!! Never been to all three places….soooo excited! GIRL TIME! and some adventures…..:)

Other WWE talent being shuffled around are Brie and Nikki Bella- who will be moved to the ECW Roster and another big play that has us gushing- Natalya is moving to Smackdown!

That’s right! The Hart Dynasty will be joining the best WWE programming on TV at this time. David Hart Smith, Tyson kidd and Natalya will add much appreciated Canadian content to Smackdown.

That means the McCool will have Natalya in her heel corner. The two of them together are going to give Melina, Eve and Laya(?) a pretty hard time.

We won’t see a McCool Gail Kim feud, but we may get to see a Beth versus Gail Kim program- which, after Gail Kim’s failed launch on Smackdown and Beth’s humiliation over the last few months, both wrestlers could really use to get the train back on the track! We’ve finally got a reason to watch women’s wrestling on Raw again…
